Broadcast in 1991, the third season of
The Simpsons contains a host of candidates for "Best
Simpsons Episode Ever." Homer is in such good form throughout that a reasonable case can be made that he has superseded the importance of his Greek namesake in the annals of culture and civilization. The opener, "Stark Raving Dad," for instance, features a guest appearance by an uncredited Michael Jackson, who plays an obese white inmate whom Homer meets while confined to a mental institution. Other standout episodes include "Like Father, Like Clown," in which Krusty reveals he is estranged from his Rabbi father; this is
The Simpsons at the height of its powers, mature, ironic, erudite, and touching while bristling with slapstick and Bart-inspired cheek. "Flaming Moe's" features Aerosmith and sees Homer invent a cocktail that desperate, sleazy bartender Moe steals from him. "Radio Bart" is another demonstration of the series' knack for cultural references, parodying the Billy Wilder movie
Ace in the Hole. Finally, there's "Brother Can You Spare Two Dimes," in which Danny DeVito reprises his role as Homer's brother, regaining the fortune Homer lost him by inventing a Baby Translator. Immensely enjoyable at any level, this third year demonstrates conclusively that
The Simpsons is quite simply, and by a large margin, the greatest television show ever.

Trivia: In the episode "Homer3" (TreeHouse of Horror) where Homer enters the third dimension at the back of the bookcase, you can see the numbers and letters 46 72 69 6E 6B 20 72 75 6C 65 73 21 float by. This is actually hexidecimal code for "Frink rules!" (you can check by putting this code in your browser bar (only works in IE): 'about:Frink rules!').
(more) Goofs: Continuity: Louis, Bart's black friend, appears yellow in one frame in "The Crepes Of Wrath" when Principal Skinner is introducing his mother to Bart and his friends.
(more) Quotes: Homer: Marge there's something that I want to ask you but I'm afraid because if you say no it will destroy me and make me a criminal.
Marge: Well, I haven't said no to you yet have I?
Homer: Marge... Oh dammit.
Marge: What's wrong?
Homer: Oh I wrote down what I wanted to say on a card. The stupid thing must have fallen out of my pocket.
[
horn honking]
Marge: Is this it?
Homer: Yeah what does it say?
Marge: Marge, from the moment I met you I never wanted to be with anyone else. I have nothing to offer you except all of my love. Will you marry me?
Homer: That's it. Give it here.
