Lane Meyer (John Cusack) has just been dumped by his girlfriend Beth (Amanda Wyss) for the pretentious captain of their high school ski team. He works in fast food, is having trouble in school, and is being stalked by their irate paperboy. Understandably depressed, he devises several comical ways of killing himself to ease the pain. His friends and family, while well-meaning, just compound his misery by trying to help him get over it. A new friendship with the French exchange student, Monique (Diane Franklin), gives him more confidence, and he challenges the ski team captain to ski the K-12. Will he win the race? Will his ex-girlfriend take him back? Will the beautiful exchange student finally heal his broken heart?
